An independent school on the outskirts of Bury St Edmunds has shut with immediate effect and entered voluntary liquidation, just months after a £1million relaunch.
Brookes UK announced on Tuesday that its school in Risby would close as result of “mounting financial pressures, reduced enrolment, unpaid fees and the cumulative impact of wider economic challenges.” A statement said that despite “exploring every viable option”, closure was the “only responsible course of action.” “It is with deep regret that Brookes UK School announces it permanent closure, effective immediately,” a statement read.
“Despite the tireless efforts of the school’s leadership team, governors and staff, the school has declared a state of insolvency and will now enter voluntary liquidation.” David Rose, director at Brookes Education Group added: “This school has always been more than just a place of learning. It has been a community of committed educators, supportive familities and talented young people. We are devastated to see it close.”
The announcement comes nearly four months after the school unveiled its new look in order to align with other schools – it has sites in Canada, India and Russia – it runs. Charley King, director at the group, revvealed up to £1million would be invested as part of the transformation. It would also become the first school in East Anglia to teach the International Baccalaureate. There were also plans to refurbish some of the buildings, investing in new IT equipment and building a sports dome. The statement from the school continues: “The board of directors would like to extend their sincere thanks to the families, students, staff and local community for their unwavering support over the years. A dedicated communication line has been set up for any enquiries relating to the school’s closure.”
The liquidation process will be overseen by McTear Williams & Wood Limited in Norwich.
